Chairman’s Comment – ‘Food’ Market at the Library
Presently this is taking place on the second Saturday of each month. We were not consulted beforehand, we do not know whether it is temporary or permanent, it is not just food. What we do know is that many of our independent traders who make Didsbury the place it is are suffering because of it. We also feel that the fabric of the environment around the library/war memorial has suffered and will suffer because of it.
If you have an opinion about the market we urge you to contact your local councillor and/or John Leech MP to make your feelings known. You must do this if we are to reduce its impact/have it withdrawn.
The strength of the Society lies in the number of its members and their ability to make their opinions known. On behalf of the Society, and with the backing of the Executive, I have already written to the Head of South Manchester Markets, the council leader, Richard Leese, and our local representatives. This is a situation where your voice is really important because without the weight of public opinion the Council will continue to force upon Didsbury unnecessary and ill-thought-out schemes.

Other Planning matters
Casino at Parrs Wood
The Rank Organisation would like to open a casino at the Parrs Wood Leisure Complex in the premises previously used by Buckingham Bingo. Planning Permission has not been applied for yet, Rank have held several consultations about the plans.
The Civic Society is concerned about these plans because of the presence of the school and the entertainment venues on the site which attract children to the site. When the Planning Permission Application is submitted, the Civic Society will advise anyone wishing to object about the grounds on which they can object.
